Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To date the project has achieved the following objectives: selection of candidate machine and inverter topology for proof-of-concept demonstration purposes; preliminary assessment of PWM options and selection of implementation platform; consolidated parametric design options for both inverter and machine; preliminary demonstration of Split-Mid-Point inverter modular design (one paper published on this topic at ECCE Asia 2021) yielding same power density and full load efficiency as traditional design; prototype power cell and gate driver development with ongoing experimental functional demonstration; preliminary formulation of theoretical joint design framework, summarised in an abstract submitted for publication at an upcoming specialist conference (ICEMS2021).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project has advanced as planned in the first year and has also moved the first steps in the second year according to the original workplan. The consolidation of the joint design framework is still in progress, but all major intended goals were met at least at a preliminary stage. Notwithstanding some Corona related difficulties (e.g. remote supervision of researchers), we managed to stay on track and make regular progress. The results of the first year have been summarised in one accepted publication at the IEEE ECCE-Asia2021 conference and in one abstract submitted for consideration at ICEMS2021.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The project is now entering the most scientifically enthusing phase, consisting in the development of hardware prototypes of machine and inverter, separately. Results of experiments will be used in iteration with design optimization to consolidate and validate the joint design framework proposal. The second year we expect to be rich in both experimental and theoretical results, which will be mutually underpinning their significance. We expect that in the second year we will have sufficient material in quantity and quality for considering a journal publication, next to a couple more conference publications.
