Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Although we were unable to collect enough numbers of adult squid to spawn naturally in a large tank, we developed a method to induce spawning in a small tank. The environment with a lot of fine organic matter was not suitable for the survival of the larvae, and they did not show any behavior to forage for the fine organic matter attached to their body surface. Analysis of equilibrium stones indicated that events that may affect subsequent survival, such as trophic conversion, may occur some time after egg yolk absorption. In addition, caecilians and other organisms were detected in stomach contents collected in natural waters, but in small quantities, suggesting the need for improvements such as preservation of materials. Gram-negative bacteria that degrade candidate factors were obtained from microorganisms attached to natural squid, and these bacteria were of the same genus as those in the breeding tanks, indicating that they may be involved in mother-to-child transmission.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
