Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Dissolved oxygen loggers and instruments to measure the daily photosynthetic photon flux density and wind velocity were deployed at 5 locations. One at the Undaria pinnatifida (wakame) farm in Hirota Bay, Iwate Prefecture. One at the Undaria pinnatifida farm in Matsushima Bay, Miyagi Prefecture. One at the Cladosiphon okamuranus (okinawa-mozuku) farm at Bise Point, Okinawa Prefecture. Instruments were also deployed at two sites in Arikawa Bay, Nagasaki Prefecture to provide information regarding natural seaweed ecosystems. Additionally, experiments to estimate photosynthetic activity of a Sargassum macrocarpum (nokogirimoku)found at the natural ecosystems were closely examined and showed the temperature response of photosynthesis in this seaweed.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Regardless of the problems caused by the COVID-19 epidemic on the ability of the research team to conduct field work, we were able to deploy instruments to remotely monitor the ecosystems. Also we heavily relied on online platforms to conduct meetings, share information, and discuss results. Hence, our work is progressing very well.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will continue to deploy the instruments to collect more data, so that we can improve our estimates of the potential of seaweed farms to capture carbon and function as a blue carbon ecosystem. Additionally, we are expecting to collect results regarding the nutrient capture rates of Undaria pinnatifia.
