Outline of Final Research Achievements

The number concentration of microplastics detected in soil samples taken at different depths was highest in the 0-5 cm layer. Below the plow layer, the number concentration decreased significantly compared to the near-surface layer. However, the fact that a certain number of microplastics were identified even at a depth of 50 cm, and the fact that the proportion of tiny microplastics increased as one moved from the surface layer to the lower layers, suggests the possibility that microplastics move vertically within the soil profile. The particle size of the identified microplastics was most commonly 20-100 μm, and the number concentration decreased as the particle size increased. Therefore, it is important to accurately quantify the fraction of microplastics in soil that is less than 100 μm, which makes up the majority of microplastics in soil.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
