Outline of Final Research Achievements

The objectives of this research project are: A. to clarify the overview of sound art in Taiwan; B. to accumulate case studies on sound art in Japan and to describe the overview; C. to conduct individual case studies on sound art in Europe and the United States; and D. to integrate these research results and to find an inter-Asian perspective. However, due to the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, A and C, which required overseas research, did not progress much. On the other hand, B made intensive progress in research, and based on the accumulation so far, it was possible to promote D. Especially, the publication of the single-authored book 'What is Sound Art?' has become the foundation for further case studies and international comparative and comprehensive research in the future.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

サウンド・アートなる名称で参照される対象の特徴は、音楽、視覚美術、メディア・アート等々の様々なディシプリンで、実質的な対象や歴史や特質について別様に理解されることである。また、欧米日において、少しずつ異なるニュアンスを維持しながら別様に理解されることである。本研究は、それぞれのニュアンスの違いを系譜学的かつ事例に基づいて実証的に検証することで、1980年代に音を扱う芸術をめぐってある種の亀裂が生じたことを明らかにした。こちら更なる検証が必要だが、1980年代の音響文化の特質の一つを発見し、今後の研究の基盤となること、これが本研究の学術的意義かつ社会的意義である。
