Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research examines “Japonisme” created in France, not by studying the bilateral traffic between the two countries of Japan and France, but by using a three-point approach including Vietnam. Specifically, the study identified the proliferation of Japanese aesthetics and art by France, its acceptance and development by Vietnam, and Japan's response to this through documents. The French art administration in Indochina tried to educate the arts in the “Japanese style” by inviting teachers from Japan and using Japanese decorative arts as a model in the art and craft schools and vocational schools in France. As for lacquerware, maki-e, a lacquerware technique not previously found in Vietnam, can be confirmed. As for painting, the composition, subject matter, and techniques of ukiyoe were accepted and developed.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
