Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This was the second year of my research project. Unfortunately, my plans to travel to the U.S. for the purpose of conducting archival research at several institutions were yet again thwarted by the Covid pandemic. I had promised my publisher that I would complete a draft for the second volume of my book manuscript by no later than 2022, but the inability to conduct archival research in the U.S. has required me to adjust the nature of my project. I have thus collected as much material as possible while remaining in Japan throughout the pandemic and have completed a draft of the second volume of my book, which I submitted to my editor in May 2022. I intend to conduct supplemental research at U.S. archives during August-September 2022, then to incorporate those findings into a final draft of the book, which is currently expected to be published in 2023.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
As noted above, I have been forced to adjust my original plans for this project due to travel restrictions caused by the Covid pandemic. My writing has been proceeding roughly according to schedule, and in May 2022 I submitted a draft of the second volume of my book to my editor at Iwanami Publishers. Since I was unable to conduct research for this book at U.S. archives as planned, I have been forced to curtail that facet of my research and to complete the book manuscript based on materials collected while remaining in Japan.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I hope to extend the period of this grant by one year in order to visit archives in the U.S. that I was unable to visit during the first two years of my grant. I then intend to present findings from that archival research in future publications.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Most of the funds from this research grant were intended to be used to cover travel expenses to the U.S., where I intended to visit various archives throughout the country. I have yet to be able to visit the U.S. due to the Covid pandemic and hope to make several trips during the remainder of my grant period for the purpose of supplemental research. The remaining funds would be used primarily to cover those expenses.
