Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
After substantial delay in commencing my U.S.-based research due to Covid, I was finally able to complete most of the research remaining on my book and have now finished the manuscript. I am currently reviewing the galley prints with my editor, and the book is expected to be published in fall 2023 by Iwanami Publishers. It will appear in two volumes and is expected to total 800-900 pages, including approximately 40 pages of endnotes. The book, written in Japanese, is entitled 『ジャズピアノ――その歴史から聴き方まで』(Jazz Piano: A History and Guide to Listening) and is aimed at both specialists and a general readership.
To my knowledge, there is no comparably thorough study of the history of jazz piano available in any language.Nonetheless, I had to excise substantial portions of the manuscript that could not be included due to length restrictions, and I have begun writing a paperback edition that focuses on the modern jazz piano trio. This paperback book will include new research to be conducted in the U.S. in summer 2023 while incorporating parts of the original manuscript that will not appear in the hardback edition.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the Covid epidemic, I was unable to conduct the archival research in the U.S. needed for this project as originally planned. On the other hand, I have completed the manuscript and, as noted below, am currently working on a paperback book that incorporates portions of the manuscript that could not be included in the hardback edition due to length restrictions.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The two-volume hardback edition of the book resulting from this research is already in production and is expected to be published (either simultaneously or sequentially) in fall 2023. In addition, I am now working on a paperback book(新書版) that focuses on the modern jazz piano trio. This book will include new research material as well as incorporating parts of the prior manuscript that could not be included due to length restrictions. I intend to undertake a final research trip to the U.S. in summer 2023 to complete research for this book.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The entire project was delayed due to the inability to conduct archival research in the U.S. during the Covid epidemic. Nonetheless, I have completed the manuscript, which turned out to be substantially longer than intended, and I am currently working on a much shorter, paperback edition aimed at a general readership (see above). I am hoping that the paperback edition will be published by March 2024, in which case I will have published three volumes based on research conducted under this Kakenhi grant.
