Outline of Final Research Achievements

Through an analysis of the neoclassical sculpture "The Tomb of Canova," I clarified the history and characteristics of the birth of modern monuments (such as the retreat of authorship and the revival of allegory). In addition, by comparing the production activities of Giulio Monteverde and Okuma Ujihiro, I examined the characteristics of modern Japan's reception of monuments and the background to the emergence of the concept of monuments in Japan, such as "Dozo." In addition, I examined the issues of the representation of monuments (photographs and paintings) and artistic interventions in monuments in contemporary Japan and Singapore, and realized a multifaceted theory of monuments.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

従来の彫刻史研究はモニュメントの生成・流通の構造を十分に説明するものではなかったが、本研究は新古典主義後期の彫刻作品の精査を通して、これを試みる点、学術的な意義大である。また日本近代のモニュメント受容を、G・モンテヴェルデ作品の調査をもってあとづける点も画期的である。近年、世界各地の多くのモニュメントが、その建立の歴史的経緯や、現今の政治的公正等の観点から批判・非難、さらには撤去の対象となっているが、そうした状況に対する彫刻史・美術史学からの応答、問題理解への礎としても、本研究の社会的意義は大きい。
