Outline of Final Research Achievements

We held five symposiums, including the Colloquium: Self and Other in Modern Art of Southeast Asia, and deepened discussions on this research theme with researchers in Japan and abroad. In addition, I investigated the Chua Mia Tee Exhibition in National Callery Singapore and traveled to four cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta, to study examples of the relations between modern art and national identity in Southeast Asia. Inparticular, I investigated national monuments. At the same time, I interviewed persons who were still alive at the time of my first visit to Southeast Asia in 1978, which was the beginning of our awareness of the issue of this research theme. The results of this research were compiled in to a report and published.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

東南アジアの近代美術史研究については、おおまかな各国別の美術史の語りは定説として存在するものの、より深い問題意識に基づいた研究、実証的な研究、あるいは個別の作家、作品研究はまだ少ない。また既存の「定説」に関する批判的な検証も端緒についたばかりである。本研究は、「ナショナル・アイデンティティ」という観点から、東南アジアという地域における近代美術に共通する問題意識を深化させたところに学術的意義がある。同時に、日本近代美術と比較することで、日本近代美術史においてはあまり問題として意識されないナショナル・アイデンティティと美術作品の問題を顕在化させる意義もある。
