Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study clarified the technical characteristics of night scene paintings by Atkinson Grimshaw, a British painter the 19th-century.
In this study, we confirmed that there was a technics complementary color and imprimatur in the early works of the 1860’s and specified those technics are also within night scene paintings of the 1870’s. Those things are arranged as two academic papers. In particular, the possibility of using copal varnish, which had been pointed out in previous studies, was proved by using sample production. and the utility of this traditional painting medium was showed. In addition, a sample work was painted based on the knowledge gained by examination. Therefor some points for painting night scenes with oil paints were shown from point of the processes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

油絵具を用いた夜景絵画の描画法ついて、制作過程に焦点を当てた技法書は少ない。本研究では、グリムショーの作品の分析を踏まえ、描画のポイントを実践を示すことができた。これは、第三者が夜景絵画の制作を行う際の一つの参考例となりうると考える。
本研究代表者が調べた限り、グリムショーの夜景作品を収蔵する美術館やギャラリーは少なく、当然認知度も低いといえる。本研究では、我が国におけるグリムショーの絵画の魅力を学会論文を通して発信することができた。
