Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we surveyed non-commercial film screening activities across various regions of Japan in the 1980s. This was a period during which some independent screening groups transitioned into establishing mini-theaters. We focused particularly on the Kansai region, where we interviewed members of screening groups and uncovered historical materials. Additionally, we investigated film screening and video collection activities at museums, art centers, film libraries, and similar institutions since the 1980s, allowing us to examine the history of public screening activities.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

映画の非商業的な上映活動の歴史は、商業映画館の歴史研究や観客論が盛んに行われている現状でも、未開拓な研究領域のままである。本研究では、1980年代に各地で行われていた自主上映活動の一部が変容を遂げ、ミニシアターなどの商業映画館の活動に移行していく状況を、資料やインタビューに基づき示すことで、現在われわれが享受する映画館文化が形成される過程を考察することができた。研究開始時の2020年、新型コロナウイルス感染症の感染拡大が生じたことで、改めて映画館の価値や公共的役割が議論されたが、本研究が提示した視座は、こうした上映空間の公共性を歴史的に再考していくためにも有益であると考える。
