Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I only managed a brief research trip to Kyoto (March 22-26, 2021), where I chased up Japanese sources on steampunk at Kyoto City University of Arts. Through the books and articles that I've read, and through my discussions with Midori Nakamura of Kyoto City University of the Arts, I now have an idea of the status of steampunk as an aesthetic among art students and professional artists in their thirties and forties in Japan. During my trip to Kyoto, I also met up with Kuri Katsuyama of the Kyoto University of the Arts and Yuko Otagaki of Poole University. We discussed the connection between steampunk and environmentalism as a movement. I am working with them on a book project on Romantic Environmental Sensibility, and we agreed to explore the possibility of us working together on steampunk.
I regret that I was unable to do more because of the coronavirus situation. There were no performances at the steampunk theatre (Non-verbal Theatre Gear) where I wanted to watch a performance. I could not access the libraries of many universities (which were closed to visiting scholars), and I could not go overseas as it was prohibited. It was also impossible to invite experts from abroad to work on this project.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The coronavirus situation was such that it was difficult to access research materials in Japan and impossible to access research materials overseas. It also made it difficult to meet colleagues in the field. Also, the conferences that I intended to participate in overseas have either been cancelled or postponed.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
June 2021: Interview Japanese steampunk artist Nozomu Shibata September 2021: Presentation at the Prospect of Improvement conference October to December 2021: Write up a research paper on Japanese steampunk artist, Nozomu Shibata
|
Causes of Carryover |
I was unable to use most of my grant because of the coronavirus situation. I'm hoping that situation will improve enough for me to visit the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, as well as consult research materials in London and Glasgow. I am also hoping to meet with more research contacts in Japan and overseas.
