Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I participated in the 3rd International Colloquium in Contemporary Philosophy and Culture, *Global Cultural Encounters: Impacts and Inspirations*, which took place in Rio de Janeiro from June 8 to 10. My presentation, '"Me, an Occasional Metalsmith": Art, Craft and Everyday Life', delivered on June 8, enabled me to communicate the extent to which Japanese steampunk sculpture draws on both the English Arts and Crafts movement as well as mingei (民芸). I received useful feedback from the audience who approached my subject from a number of viewpoints including literature, philosophy and art history. As a result of this conference, I was able to complete my chapter for Pierpaolo Ascari and Andrea Borsari's proposed book, *Aesthetics of Steampunk*.
