Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The goal of this research is to collect eye movement/reading time data from Japanese speakers of English with varying levels of proficiency for comparison with data from native speakers of English. Unfortunately, we have been unable to collect data during the last year due to restrictions due to COVID19. The collection of eye tracking data requires the participants and researchers to be in a confined area (i.e., the room where the eye tracking equipment is located) - a situation which is not possible under the current restrictions. We hope to start collecting data as soon as restrictions are relaxed. However, we have been able to collect preliminary data (online self-paced reading time data from native speakers of English) which will serve as a partial control for the eye movement data which we hope to collect from Japanese speakers of English

We hope to start collecting data as soon as restrictions are relaxed.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We anticipate being able to start collecting eye tracking data in the later part of 2021 (assuming COVID19 related restrictions are relaxed). In addition, we are designing alternate experiments using on-line self-paced reading and other tasks to address the same theoretical issues as the originally planned eye tracking experiments.
