Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The goal of this research is to collect eye movement/reading time data. Unfortunately, we have been unable to collect data during the last year due to restrictions due to COVID19. The collection of eye tracking data requires the participants and researchers to be in a confined area (i.e., the room where the eye tracking equipment is located) - a situation which is not possible under the current restrictions. We hope to start collecting data as soon as restrictions are relaxed. However, we continue to collect preliminary data (online self-paced reading time data and sentence completion data from native speakers of English) which will serve as a partial control for the eye movement data which we hope to collect from Japanese speakers of English.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The goal of this research is to collect eye movement/reading time data from Japanese speakers of English with varying levels of proficiency for comparison with data from native speakers of English.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We anticipate being able to start collecting eye tracking data in the later part of 2022 (assuming COVID19 related restrictions continue to be relaxed). In addition, we continue work on designing alternate experiments using on-line self-paced reading and other tasks to address the same theoretical issues as the originally planned eye tracking experiments.
|
Causes of Carryover |
We are currently unable to collect eye-tracking data due to COVID-19 related restrictions. Once we are able to resume data collection, the unspent funds will be used to pay participant reward fees and salary for a research assistant to help in collecting data. Additionally, we anticipate presenting results at conferences, once we are able to collect sufficient data.
