| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the second year of the project (FY2021), the outcome of a 90-minute lecture conducted in Japanese in February 2021 (the previous academic year) was published as part of the NipCA project at the University of Tsukuba in cooperation with The Nippon Foundation. For details, see 「図書」below.
In addition, the researcher has been collecting data related to the immigrant situation in Belgium (country of comparison). Of particular interest is the “Agentschap Integratie en Inburgering” (Agency for Civic Integration) originated by the Flemish government but run by independently.
Also, in order to conduct the planned motivation survey, the researcher has tried contacting several local authorities to request cooperation. However, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has created an apparent reluctance towards participation approval.

4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Similarly to the first year of the project, the Covid-19 pandemic has made it impossible to conduct fieldwork. In addition, the extra workload due to online classes and related course material preparation continue to take away time and possibilities to conduct sufficient research.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As indicated in the report for the FY 2020, the researcher foresees to extend the research project with one year. In FY2022 and the extension (FY2023), the planned surveys will be submitted for review by the University's ethics review board. Upon approval, the surveys will be conducted and analyzed.

| Causes of Carryover |
The budget for FY2021 was meant to buy equipment (PC, voice recorders, video camera, etc.) and conference participation. Due to the reasons explained in 「現在までの進捗状況」and 「今後の研究の推進方策」, the researcher hopes to be able to participate in-person at conferences and further implement the research project in FY2022. Again, the "Incurring Amount" will be used in a responsible manner.
