Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aims to clarify at which stage English learners possess derivative word knowledge, to what extent they have it, and how it develops. A retrospective analysis of their learning history revealed that relatively few learners remembered receiving instruction on derivative word knowledge in middle and high school. However, those who did recall such instruction were found to have more extensive derivative word knowledge. Furthermore, among university students, the growth of derivative word knowledge over a year was minimal, suggesting the need for conscious instruction through middle school, high school, and university. The data obtained is expected to shed further light on the conceptual organization of derivative word knowledge and its relationship with other skills.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
派生語知識は英語の語彙力の中の一つではあるが、読解や聴解との関連が深く、重要なものと考えられている。しかし、中高大の英語の授業でどの程度指導されているのかは分かっていない。本研究から、記憶に残るほどの指導がなされていないこと、記憶に残っていると知識が確かに備わっていることが分かった。中高大を通じた明示的で意識的な指導が求められることが分かった。
