Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
2022 was a very difficult time for conducting research. Now that we are back on campus and can continue qualitative data collection, our intent is to complete the research aim this year. We could collect data from two classes in two different states and began preparing a follow-up. The website is complete and can be built out from here and has been used in in-class and homework activities in two different courses. This proves it is a robust and universally accessible platform. No complaints have been received with regard to its accessibility on a computer platform or a tablet or smartphone. This gives us confidence that our use of the materials can be expanded with confidence over the next year. Our intention is to provide an open-access resource for future classes both on-campus and elsewhere. The availability of ELF-connected material is rarely available freely, and our intent is to replace the need for textbooks that can have a detrimental effect on EFL, ESL, and ELF-users of the language. The intended outcome of this project is to make it far easier for ELF-oriented language instructors to have materials readily available for their classes. The extension of this project will allow us a longer time to trial the materials and receive valuable feedback from the students.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The lack of students of on campus meant we couldn't prepare new materials. Also, not being able to spend time in-room with participants made it difficult to conduct interviews. The change in COVID restrictions starting in May will help us to complete our research plans.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
When we can be in closer proximity with students on-campus, we will use our recording equipment to conduct interviews in relation to our English as a Lingua Franca project and increase the breadth of our online content.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The money for this year will be used to maintain the website, build out the available materials, and increase the promotion of the material at conferences, through publications, and also on-campus promotion using our SALC facilities. Our efforts to this point have been mostly focused on building the materials from the interviews we have. The focus from here will be to consider how to implement them methodologically and provide plans and materials for language instructors to use the interviews in an ELF-positive manner.
