Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The COVID-19 pandemic definitely delayed several aspects of this project. The first stage of the pandemic prevented access to campus and other services, such as interlibrary loans. This situation continued into the summer. However, since access to campus and other services have become available, I have gathered a large number of studies, which has allowed me to identify topics to cover and to formulate questions for the pending interviews. I now have enough background to submit to conferences, but this will obviously depend on the COVID-19 situation at the time. I’ve also began constructing a survey to be distributed throughout Japan. This survey may lead to more interviews as participants who complete the survey will be given the opportunity to ask to be interviewed.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Given the current travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines, which make campus visits to conduct interviews a complicated if not risky affair, I will interview university professors via video-conferencing applications. The collection of information from universities that are not represented by interviewees will be conducted through online surveys.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The future research plan to collect survey data and record internet-based interviews will lead to the need to purchase additional software and hardware not originally listed in the project’s proposal. Also, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was unable to purchase a research computer last year, but I will purchase one this year as one is needed to conduct the interviews. Also, if the COVID-19 situation improves, the additional money may be applied to international conference fees and travel, as well as to local travel and attendance fees for domestic conferences.
