Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not able to accomplish our original plan. However, we were able to do a study on how this pandemic would affect the teachers using online. We were able to accomplish the following. First, we did a survey on Google Docs - English Instructors’ MOI During the Pandemic - To identify whether emergency remote learning during the pandemic of 2020 has affected university English instructors’ MOI in English classes. This happened from July to September). Second, we did three presentations using the results from our survey - a) JACET-CS Zoom presentation, October 17; b) JALT2020 Live Zoom presentation, November 21; and c) CamTESOL online (we also used teachers' interviews in this presentation), February 7, 2021. Third, we interviewed thirteen university teachers from November to March. Fourth, we have done three conference proposals for academic year of 2021: a) JALT2021 conference in November; and b) All Shikoku JALT in June; and c) JACET convention in August. Fifth, we finished writing a paper for JALT: The Language Teacher. Sixth, we met three to four times a month through ZOOM. Seventh, we have made plans for the academic year 2021 on what we would like to accomplish.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
At first, my research colleagues and I thought that we would probably have to delay our research because of the pandemic. However, we found that we could take an advantage how the pandemic would affect teachers' way of teaching using either the L1 and/or L2 when they have to use interactive system such as ZOOM and learning management systems such as Moodle. Because of this, we could make much more progress than expected.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In AY2021, if possible while we still experiencing the pandemic, we would like to observe teachers teaching in their classroom using ZOOM. We are planning to do about four to five presentations, and we are currently writing a paper for The Language Teacher and another paper to publish. We are planning to interview students to find out their feelings about the remote learning in the English classes.

Causes of Carryover |
In the AY2021, my co-researcher (Ian Willey)and I will be presenting at three domestic conferences (All Shikoku JALT, JALT conference, and JACET convention), and one or two international conferences (CAMTESOL in Cambodia and RELC in Singapore). We will need to buy a computer for those conferences. There are journals and books that we will need to buy.
