Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this research was to develop a leadership curriculum and train student leaders who provide autonomous and prosocial learning opportunities for other learners through their learning communities. In the three years, we conducted activities related to 1) autonomy-supportive leadership course implementation and development at the principal researcher’s institution, 2) needs analysis at a Japanese educational institution, and 3) on-site observation of student-led communities at the Federal University of Para in Brazil. This research culminated in the publication of a course book based on the theories and materials developed through the studies 1)-3) above (Watkins & Hooper, 2023).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

近年、「個別最適な学びと協働的な学びの実現」として、児童を主体とした深い学びや、個々の興味関心の探求と他者との協働を通した、学習者自らが学ぶ力の育成が求められているが（文部科学省，2021）、国内においてそのような教育の例は限られている。本研究では、興味や目標を共有する学習者がコミュニティを運営し、学習言語を活用しながら協働するという、上記教育の実例にあたる学生コミュニティリーダーの育成と、それに伴う理論検討と教材開発を実施した。そのような研究は、言語教育の場に限らず、今後学習者主体、かつより包括的な教育の普及に貢献できるものと考える。
