Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the past year, we were able to analyze both the quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data was analyzed for five measures, including three complexity measures, one accuracy measure, and one fluency measure. Three of the complexity measures were analyzed using the L2 complexity analyzer online software. The accuracy measure was carefully segmented and scored by both the Primary Investigator and the Co-investigator. Fluency measures were calculated using a simple ratio of words per 15 minutes. The results were then statistically analyzed for significant changes. The interviews were transcribed and translated by the CI and analyzed, revealing four major themes. All the data was presented at the annual national Japan Association of Language Teacher conference in November 2021. A paper reporting these results will be published in the conference proceedings sometime in the summer of 2022.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the sudden shift to Emergency Remote Teaching, data was not collected until the fall of 2020. This has slightly delayed the plan. Also, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been unable to share the results at international conferences we planned to attend.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Next year, we will continue to analyze the data, especially the qualitative data in order to uncover more themes and connections to the quantitative data. We plan to present at the annual Japan Association of Language Teacher PanSIG conference in Nagano in June. We also plan to write another paper with the hope of publishing in the near future.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to travel for conferences and workshops with other researchers. Also, equipment purchases were not as much as we anticipated. If we are able to, we plan to use the leftover amount for conference and travel expenses as well as software and/or computer equipment to expand the investigation to potentially include an analysis of lexical complexity.
