Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2020 and FY2021, Chiba University cancelled all outbound in-person exchange programs, leading to a drastic reduction in the number of participants in English language courses focused on cultural communication. Subsequently, the data collection for our project was slowed down drastically. In FY2022, we processed the survey data collected for 75 students in the period FY2019-FY2021 and analyzed three distinct components of students' transformational experiences: 1) Perceptions of self in the context of intercultural communication (Japanese to international); 2) Evolution of students' motivation to learn and use English for academic communication; and 3) Perception of communication style through comparisons. Transformations in the experiential components were measured according to four psychometric scales used in the Beliefs Events and Values Inventory. The survey data suggests that students could perceive differences in how they behaved in front of a Japanese audience compared to an international audience. Students generally mentioned that the English curriculum was challenging but engaging enough that they felt they wanted to continue using English to communicate with international interlocutors. Finally, Japanese students could compare and contrast communication strategies in speaking and writing.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel, interest in elective language classes was reduced in FY2020-FY2021. This affected the number of participants in the survey and slowed down the data analysis process. Our findings were presented at international conferences and published in proceedings.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will continue the communication of our findings through international conferences on nursing education and language education. We are in the process of finalizing the validity analyses for our survey data to produce the latest version of the questionnaire. Once, that part of the analysis is completed, we are planning to submit our findings for consideration in nursing education journals.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel, in-person participation in international conferences and symposia was delayed.
