Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the second year of the project, the researchers edited and published an article titled: Measuring real-time learner engagement in the Japanese EFL classroom, published in the January 2022 edition of Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching. This article outlined the teacher and student experience of using the application and some of the limitations faced, based on the data collected during 2020. Additionally, the researchers were also accepted to present on the project at CALICO 2022 and JALTCALL 2022. Based on the first round of data collection, the PI continued to develop the engagement tool for further rounds of data collection, focusing on addressing bugs found and improvements needed. Preparations were also made to begin a new round of data collection.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
While bugs and improvements to the application were identified, resulting in a longer period of development than expected, overall the project has been proceeding smoothly with a second round of data collection expected early in 2022, with final publication of results expected thereafter.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The results of the first round of data collection have informed the refinement and improvement of the engagement measuring application tool. This tool will now be used in a new round of data collection conducted with the participation of a second university in Japan. Presentations at CALICO 2022 in the USA and JALT CALL 2022 in Japan will be given and the final publication of the results of the entire project will be written and published.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Developmental costs for the application needed to be divided between improvements made after the first round of data collection (2020) and after the second (2022), rather than all at the beginning due to more bugs and UI issues faced than expected. Due to the pandemic, presentations at conferences both domestic and international were delayed until the final year of the project, necessitating the movement of travel budget from 2021 to 2022.
