Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project focused on the development, piloting, and validation of a web-based research application called Classmoto, a tool designed to measure L2 learner engagement in real-time using experience sampling. The research achievements of this project include the successful validation of the Classmoto application, which effectively measures students' classroom engagement in real-time across three distinct factors: cognitive, behavioral, and emotional. The validation process involved expert panel agreement, Principal Component Analysis, and two pilot implementations with multiple classes at a L2-focused university in Japan over one year. The study demonstrated that Classmoto accurately captures real-time fluctuations in students' engagement levels, with responses showing non-linear ebbs and flows throughout the semester. Furthermore, the research established that the three engagement measures, while related, are not identical, and thus measure separate aspects of engagement. The wide distribution of standard deviations at each data collection point provided additional evidence for the instrument's validity, supporting the idea that Classmoto appropriately elicited students' real-time cognition and that students were truthfully responding to the questions.

Remarks |
the web-app is not yet accessible to the public in its current form, but we are interested in talking with teachers and researchers interested in using it as part of our continuing research.
