Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I carried out the analysis to identify metaphors that were present in a sample of the corpus I constructed last year. I hired an experienced researcher to act as a second rater for my data codings. This will allow me to determine the reliability of the metaphor analysis. I have used these findings to identify metaphorical themes used to express key concepts in four academic disciplines. I presented my preliminary findings at the JALT International Conference, and I submitted a paper of these findings for publication later this year.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
I have been able to identify metaphorical themes that are commonly used in four disciplines, as I had planned. However, the identification procedure took longer than anticipated last year, so I have not been able to carry out as comprehensive an analysis as I had planned. I was planning to identify metaphors that are common collocates of both verbs and nouns, but I was only able to complete the analysis for verbs in the past year. I will broaden my analysis in the current academic year and I hope to present these findings later in the year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the spring semester of 2022, I will broaden my analysis of metaphors to include metaphorical collocates of nouns. I will then use these findings to guide the development of course materials based on these findings, and apply to present my complete findings at conferences.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Later in the year, I hope to be able to travel to conferences to present some of my findings (COVID permitting). If this is possible, I expect most of my expenditure this year will be on travel costs.
