This study aimed to apply the principles of English as an International Language (EIL) to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) education to address the diverse English communication needs in Japan's inbound tourism industry. A multifaceted approach, including a Japanese English listening test, video-stimulated recall interviews, and participant observations, was employed.
The findings revealed that successful customer service requires understanding non-standard English expressions and interpersonal skills, such as non-verbal communication and active listening. This presents a new perspective on tourism English education, and future developments are expected in exploring strategies to incorporate these insights into university-level tourism English education and. Integrating these findings into educational practices and investigating ESP in various tourism contexts hold promise for enhancing English communication in Japan's tourism industry.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、訪日観光現場の多様な英語コミュニケーションに対応するため、国際語としての英語(EIL)の理念を特定目的の英語(ESP)教育に適用することを目指し、日本英語聴解テスト、ビデオ想起インタビュー、観光業従事者へのインタビューや実務観察など、多角的な調査を実施した。その結果、訪日観光接遇には非標準的英語表現の理解のみならず非言語コミュニケーションや傾聴姿勢などの対人スキル訓練が有効だと分かった。これは観光英語教育に新しい視点を提示するものである。今後、この知見を大学の観光英語教育に取り入れる方策の探求やアウトドアツアーガイドのESP研究など、更なる発展が期待されるだろう。
