Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year we completed the selection of 1001 target lemmas and developed test items for each of them. We also chose and developed items to test 300 further words for use as a measure of learner vocabulary size (1301 items total). We have began testing the items at multiple institutions. To date, approximately 140 students have been tested with these items. We had hoped to collect more data by this point in time. However, at the rate we are accumulating responses, it will still be possible for us to do the analysis and complete our research by the end of the grant period. Additionally, we have began a paper that pilots our analytical technique and will provide preliminary results regarding affix difficulty using a separate list of learner word difficulty that was made public this past year.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We have began collecting data on the items by testing students. However, due to the pandemic and the transition of most of our classes to online, the number of students who could complete the tests was reduced. Approximately 100 students have been tested on 100 of the items, and an additional 40 took all 1301 items.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
It is our goal to have at least 100 learners complete all 1301 items, and/or obtain a minimum of 100 responses per item. To attain this goal despite setbacks from the pandemic, we will continue our data collection through the second semester of 2022, and complete our analysis in January-March of 2023.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Not as many students could be paid for research as expected due to the pandemic and restrictions on in-person classes. We plan to use these funds in 2022 instead, now that more classes are in-person. Due to the delays in data collection caused by the pandemic, some funds allocated for previous years will be used to buy out classes to finish the analysis in time.
