Outline of Final Research Achievements

Ironware spread to Hokkaido from Western Japan in the 2nd century BC, but because there were few examples, the actual situation was unclear.Therefore, we observed the traces of iron processing found on bone and horn tools. As a result, we found that a considerable number of iron tools had been introduced to Hokkaido.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

この研究により、紀元前2世紀に西日本から北海道に相当数の鉄器が波及し、鹿角製骨角器の加工具として使用されていたことが判明した。それは現状の資料による限り、関東・東北よりも早い波及であるが、出土例の少ない鉄器そのものではなく、骨角器の鉄器加工痕の検討から導き出された結論である。よって関東・東北にも鉄器は波及していた可能性は高いのであり、従来の理解に根本的な見直しを迫ることになった。
また東北北部の伐採用の厚手の石斧や雑穀農耕とかかわる資料の検討からは、従来の東北北部と西日本・北海道との関係性にかかわる理解にも見直しを迫る成果を得ることができた。
