Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During FY2020 I reviewed academic literature, tested protocols and maintained contact with collaborators via email and video conferencing. A successful application was made to the Ethics Committee on Human Research of Komazawa University to move forward with data collection of performances commencing in 2021. I also presented the following paper at an international conference via live stream. Rockell, K (2020) Migrant contributions to the Tainan soundscape. Paper presented at the Sixth International Conference on Tainan Area Studies “Art and Material Culture in the Tainan Area”. International Centre for Tainan Area Humanities and Social Sciences Research. This paper is under submission as a book chapter for 2022. Abstracts for 3 other conferences in 2021 were also accepted.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
During FY2020, travel to partner sites was not possible as a result of COVID-19. Communication with research collaborators continued via email and video conferencing. However, the research collaborators were also experiencing problems at their respective universities because of COVID-19. Both the collaborators and myself needed to make adjustments and prepare online coursework and materials for online teaching at short notice. For this reason, our contact was not as frequent as intended, and did not allow for actual visits to the partner sites. Although travel may also not be possible in 2021, with a focus on online activity, we will strive to move ahead with the research work.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2021 I intend to (1) hold education exchanges with partner sites in Taiwan and the Philippines, (2) to collect data on semiotic clusters (SC), and (3) to create recorded, educational, intercultural performances. These performances will be online, unless health and safety condition make it practical to rehearse/record live performances. Abstracts have been accepted for one domestic and two international conferences in 2021 that will report the progress of ongoing work. A public performance lecture was planned for FY2021, but it may be prudent to postpone this presentation to the general public until early in 2022. For 2022 an impact assessment of the work to date, data analysis, conference presentation, publications, and a performance lecture for the general public are planned.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to the various problems related to COVID-19 it was not possible to travel for meetings with collaborators or to attend international academic meetings. Therefore, the funds were not used fully as planned. However, in the years 2021 and 2022, is it is possible, I intend to use the available funds for such travel.
