Outline of Annual Research Achievements

With a decrease in Covid cases by 2022 and a subsequent easing of restrictions regarding travel, opening of facilities and meeting people, a number of research trips were able to be undertaken. These included trips for resourcing, information gathering, making connections with stakeholders and project members, and also meeting stakeholders directly. Six papers were written, 5 presentations conducted and one online workshop given.

The online Te Ataarangi Ainu class completed its second year and online resources component of the class, made possible by this project, were updated. A presentation at JALT PanSIG 2022 and peer reviewed paper was written for PanSIG Journal 2022 outlining the process and results. Going into its third year, this class will continue and is considered an enormous benefit for participants committed to the revitalization of the Ainu language. One online workshop funded by this project involved a project member and an expert in Ainu language and culture discussing issues regarding identity, Ainu culture and language.

The Shigeru Kayano Nibutani Ainu Museum Translation Project saw 10 students use online tools and information to help translate Japanese explanations of artifacts in the museum into English. Research data has been collected regarding possible changes in empathy levels due to participation in the project and though yet to be analyzed, will determine whether such research projects can help in improving awareness and understanding of Ainu. Similar research endeavours for other museums and Ainu related institutions have been investigated.
