Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study investigated the longline tuna fishing industry, focusing on transnational immobile labor migrants working on boats based in Hawaii. It uncovers the maltreatment and harsh conditions faced by these migrants both in Honolulu port and at sea, where limited maritime laws leave them vulnerable. By advancing the understanding of transnational labor migrants and raising awareness of their plight, this research sheds light on human rights abuses in the industry. The ethnographic approach, informed by the PI's extensive experience as a part-time fisherman, provides rich and compelling data. Through observations and oral interviews conducted during four-week periods at sea, this study offers valuable insights into the challenges faced by those working in these conditions.
