Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year, I received a revision request again for the paper about the determinants of public attitudes towards immigrants, and therefore, I focused on revising the paper for publication. The main issue was the identification of the effect of education on the natives attitudes. The problem of the identification stems from the fact that, more educated natives may be more culturally open. Therefore, even if high-skilled natives do not favor low skilled immigrants due to economic self-interest, there will still be a positive correlation between education and the native’s pro-immigrant attitude because educated natives tend to be more culturally open. We tried to solve this issue by applying a method akin to fixed effect estimation. Specifically, we use a native’s attitude towards immigrants from two different countries to subtract-out the individual specific component. However, this method relies on our assumption that the individual specific component is the same for both countries. I was asked to revise the paper to defend this assumption. I explained that our assumption is defensible for the most part, by providing more estimations, and also cleared up some of the limitations of our assumption. I was able to respond to all the reviewer’s requests and re-submit the paper.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I was able to publish a paper
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I was able to publish one paper. In 2024, I plan to obtain similar data from different countries to see if our results hold for other countries.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Since I needed to extend the duration of the grant to increase the chance of publication.
