Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research aims to examine the impact of the diffusion of advanced knowledge and technology related to cutting-edge distribution and marketing by the international expansion of multinational retail companies on the development of the retail industry in host countries. Specifically, this research focuses on the fact that while leading retail companies from developed countries have faced many challenges in pursuing sustained growth and development in emerging economies, local retailers in those emerging economies have actively embraced “self-innovation” by incorporating knowledge and technology. This research figured out that retailers in emerging economies have achieved self-innovation through translational adaptation that incorporates new knowledge and technology that has spread from abroad while based on local traditional ideas and value systems and have managed to confront retail companies from developed countries.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

小売業の国際化にかかわる研究は,当初から先進諸国の大規模な小売企業による国境を越える事業展開を分析対象としてきた。主として,「現地市場でどのようなマーケティングが要求されるのか」 という問題について検討してきた。しかし,先進諸国の小売企業による攻勢を受ける現地の小売業者の対応については殆ど研究されることがなかった。そこで本研究では,新興経済国の小売業者による積極的な対応行動に焦点を当てるところに学術的意義を見出すことができる。また,このような研究は,新興経済国への進出を図る小売企業や新興経済国における流通政策の在り方に新たな示唆を提示するという意味において社会的意義も備わる。
