Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
With their joint pursuit of social and business goals, B corps, which are certified for-profit social enterprises that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency, are a viable path to a more sustainable and inclusive business. In FY 2022, the PI was able to present two papers at the Asia Pacific 2022 conference. The first paper explained how social enterprises are often challenged by their hybrid nature that results in divergent logics and practices required for pursuing business and social goals. The second study was about the decertification of B corps in the United States. Another achievement is the acceptance of an experimental study on B corps for presentation at the Academy of Management annual conference. This study investigated whether and how brands with B corp certification are perceived differently by consumers compared to brands without B corp certification.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The tasks in FY2022 were to analyze the data collected through an experimental study, complete a draft of the paper on consumers’ perception of certified B corps and submit the early version of the paper to an academic conference. These tasks were completed. The draft has been accepted for presentation at the Academy of Management annual conference, which is a competitive conference. It is now being revised based on the comments received from reviewers. The revised version will be submitted for publication.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY2023, the PI will present the paper on the consumers’ perception of brands with B corp certification at the Academy of Management (AOM) annual conference in Boston, U.S.A. Based on the additional comments received from AOM reviewers and audience, the paper will be revised further and submitted to the Academy of Management Discoveries for publication. In addition, meetings will be held with research collaborators to consolidate and disseminate our research findings.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The PI was unable to travel as planned in FY2022. Due to schedule conflicts, the PI was unable to attend the European International Academy of Business in FY 2022. The remaining funds will be used to cover all the travel expenses to travel to the Academy of Management conference in Boston and for professional proofreading of papers to be submitted for publication.
