Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research attempted to construct a theory of organizational becoming, which is a concept in the field of organizational history, by analyzing historical materials of 3M Company in the United States. Organizational Becoming is the view that an organization is not a given entity, but that its essence lies in the work of constructing a realistic fiction called an organization. The results of this research were to obtain concrete data regarding the history of 3M, including its product/business structure, organizational structure, financial changes, and at least the official management policies of past managers, and based on that data, It became possible to interpret changes in management.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
スリーエム社は、学術的にも、社会的にも注目された企業である一方、同社のこれまでの研究では、売上高、利益、負債、資本、事業構成、工場数、子会社数、海外拠点の展開状況などの具体的データを踏まえた議論は例外的であった。その結果、スリーエム社の企業像はステレオタイプ化されがちであった。本研究では、データ分析に依拠して、そうしたスリーエム社の企業像に新解釈を提示し、同時に、歴史的にそのあり方がどのように変化してきたのかを吟味することで、「オーガニゼーショナル・ビカミング」の分析例を提示した。
