Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to identify the formal/informal roles played by female teachers in remote schools from a collegiality building perspective. Australia, like Japan, is confronted with the challenge of early retirement, especially for teachers in remote areas. In order to make a comparison with Australia, a survey was also conducted with female teachers who had worked in remote schools in Japan. Interviews with initial teachers revealed differences in the way they interacted with their schools and communities, depending on the work environment and local characteristics. On the other hand, they found it difficult to continue working in remote areas for a long time, regardless of the quality of the local adaptation process. Interviews with former teachers who had worked in remote schools until the 1990s also revealed difficulties in building collegiality for broadly the same reasons as today.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
