Outline of Final Research Achievements

We examined whether the impairment of theory of mind in children with autism spectrum disorder is due to impairments in meta-representation and temporal causal representations by examining the association between false belief tasks, the ambiguous figure task, and the premise-confirmation question task. The results showed that only those who responded correctly to the false belief task were significantly more likely to be reversible in the two-picture condition in the ambiguous figure task, suggesting that responding correctly to the false belief task may drive meta-representations by top-down processing more easily in the two-picture condition. In addition, the results of premise-confirmation questions in the false-confession misresponders showed that the pattern of misrepresenting the "see-know" relationship despite being able to understand it was characteristic of children with autism spectrum disorder, but was not associated with impaired representations of temporal causality.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
