Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We examine mantle water to understand Earth's history driven by plate tectonics. We published first observation of iron-spin transition in the lower mantle which identifies oceanic plates necessary to carry water into the deep mantle. Shephard et al., Nature Communications, 2021. Developed a new cross filter technique to identify mineral and chemical anomalies in the lower mantle presented at the 2021 Goldschmidt meeting in July and AGU in December 2021. Organized international "Seismic Frontiers" workshop in October 2021. Kurokawa et al., G-cubed, 2022 used models of nitrogen cycling to constrain the timing of oceanic plate subduction. E.Thompson, Z. Liu, J. Tsuchiya, A. Campbell presented FeOOH Polymorphs in the Deep Earth: Combining Theoretical and Experimental Approaches at 2021 AGU.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The continued travel restrictions associated with COVID-19 have kept us from traveling to work in person together. University rules have also kept us working from home during most of the fiscal year. We continue to collaborate online even producing our own international workshop to explore the latest developments in global seismology with our "Seismology Frontiers" workshop in October 2021. We have begun applying our transition zone water mapping to understand global mantle flow with collaborators from U. of Southampton. Our nitrogen cycling work was completed resulted in a recently accepted publication in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Our research goals and plans remain similar to that described in the original proposal. We examine the seismic structure of the mantle transition zone, both the shear velocity patterns and the high and low topography of the 410 km and 660 km seismic discontinuities. Meanwhile we are also expanding the ab initio mineral physics calculations to the higher temperatures of the Earth's deep mantle. While we were not able to travel in the past year, we hope to meet and make further progress over the next year. We have multiple manuscripts in preparation for submission in 2022.

Causes of Carryover

Funds that were allocated for travel in the past fiscal year have been carried over for use in the next fiscal year.
