Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The process was investigated by smooth particle hydrodynamics modelling and experimental validation, using the prototype system. Blasting experiments (with/without ultrasonic assistance) were carried out on transparent glass windows while observing the ablation zone from behind. The following observations were found in both simulations and experiments: (1) De-agglomeration of abrasives by ultrasonic pre-processing makes the flow of particles over the blasted surface more uniform and regular (agglomerates tend to scatter on impact, which impedes the flow of subsequent abrasives). (2) De-agglomeration was also found to prevent unintended coating of the surface, (surface smearing by scattered agglomerates). Additionally, an algorithm for feed scheduling of the blasting process was developped.
