Outline of Final Research Achievements

In the Netherlands, I researched Laurenskerk Rotterdam and Metz & Co. In Germany, I researched Alte Pinakothek, renovated and designed by Hans Doellgast, Glyptothek, renovated and designed by Josef Wiedemann, and St. Anne's Church in Duren, renovated and designed by Rudolf Schwarz.

Doellgast and Wiedemann established methods of renovation that preserved the traces of war damage. Schwarz restored buildings to their original state, left them as ruins, and, as in the case of St. Anne's Church, constructed a completely different building using only existing materials.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究はオランダとドイツにおける20世紀の建築家に注目することで、歴史的建築物の改修の際の歴史的価値の残し方や新旧の共存のさせ方を言語化し、その方法の可能性を再検討し、加えて改修デザインを建築史学の対象として捉え、位置づけようとするものである。
我が国では近年、歴史的建築物の転用や改修、活用の事例が増加しているが、歴史的建築物の価値の残し方や新しいデザインの加え方において、その価値を十分に守られていない事例がも数多く存在する。現代の日本における課題を検討する上でも示唆的なものとなるだろう。したがって本研究は、学術的意義と社会的意義の両方を持ち合わせている。
