Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Together with local collaborators, I obtained and sequenced more coral specimens from Okinawa, Indonesia and the Philippines to create the final haplotype network based on mitochondrial DNA illustrating the connectivity of mesophotic corals across the region. These results confirmed the close relation of coral fauna from the Philippines and Okinawa while Indonesian corals are more distinct and showed a high level of local diversity. The results of thermal stress experiments on several corals from both deep and shallow as well as results of transplant experiments across depths have been published. I presented my results at the Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium in Singapore, and at a special event organised by the science and technology office of the Swiss embassy in Tokyo. I also discussed the results and the future development of the project at a workshop for the Cnidarian editors of the World register for Marine Species in Belgium.
