Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Although the development of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is based on changes in the cardinal veins (posterior-, sub-, supra), there has been no three-dimensional analysis that incorporates the development of the surrounding tissues. In this study, we used advanced imaging techniques and genetically engineered mice to reevaluate the development of the IVC. The results suggested that a novel venous structures might contribute to the IVC. This study indicates a new developmental origin of the IVC in mammals providing new concepts not only in embryology but also in comparative anatomy.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
