Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This budget year we focused more on the analysis of Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains. In previous years we were able to isolate a large number of V. parahaemolyticus strains and decided to move toward analysis of this pathogenic species. We obtained sequences of the V. parahaemolyticus strains isolated from the Kaeda river and analyzed their growth pattern in low-salt and no-salt environments. The growth pattern analysis was done using newly purchased OD-BOX equipment. We found wide variability in the growth pattern of V. parahaemolyticus strains, with some strains not growing at all in a low-salt environment, while other strains showed normal growth patterns in a low-salt environment. Right now we will conduct genomic analysis to identify differences between V. parahaemolyticus strains showing different growth patterns.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We had some problems receiving equipment from abroad. The delays were related to the ongoing pandemic. We predict that there will be no more delays this budget year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The main focus this budget year will be on the analysis of V. parahaemolyticus strains' growth patterns in low-salt and no-salt environments, as well as genome sequence comparison between strains showing different growth patterns. This budget year we are no longer going to sample Vibrio strains from the Kaeda river. Sampling in the previous budget years provided a sufficient number of strains for this study. We will continue genome sequencing of the isolated strains. We selected 15 strains for the whole genome sequencing, which will be done this budget year.
