2021 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Reconstruction of dose distributions using PET images in heavy ion therapy

Research Project

Project/Area Number 20K08066
Research InstitutionNational Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology

Principal Investigator

Mohammadi Akram  国立研究開発法人量子科学技術研究開発機構, 先進核医学基盤研究部, 主任研究員 (10554735)

Project Period (FY) 2020-04-01 – 2023-03-31
Keywordsdose reconstruction / PET image / ion therapy
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

A spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) of 3 cm was produced for a C-12 beam (350 MeV/u) using a designed range modulator in the carbon therapy facility of the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). Dose and PET data for C-12 beams with several energies for a PMMA phantom were prepared using Monte Carlo simulation (Phits code). The algorithm for converting PET data to dose distribution and its optimization are still under development.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The progress of the research was almost according to the original plan and there was no problem by now.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

For the next fiscal year, a head and neck phantom will be simulated and experimentally irradiated with both C-11 and C-12 beams (pristine Bragg peak and SOBP) in the HIMAC. The optimization of the algorithm for dose estimation using PET data for both C-11 and C-12 beams will be performed for the head and neck phantom.

Causes of Carryover

The required items and devices were available therefore any item was not purchased.
