Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of the present study was to clarify psychosocial factors effecting somatic complaints of workers and to assess the relationship between depression and somatic complaints. Subjects were 2,508 employees working at a workplace located in a metropolitan area. Questionaire surveys and interviews were done to evaluate work-related stress and psychosocial conditions. As results, 301 (12.0%) were classified as a high-stressed group. The commonest somatic was fatigue, followed by insomnia, neck pain, and low back pain in the high-stress group. The average number of somatic symptoms was 6.9, and significantly associated with scores on alexithymia, somatosensory amplification, catastrophic thought about somatic sense, depression, and anxiety. The degree of severity of depression was significantly associated with the number of somatic symptoms, even after controlling for the effects of other factors by the multiple regression analysis.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
