Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study investigated the effects of chronic oral exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) on rat cardiovascular function and on the reactivity of microglia (MG) - the neurons' protectors - in the area postrema (AP), a cardiovascular center lacking a blood-brain barrier (BBB). Wistar rats received daily doses of 50nm diameter PSNPs or control solutions for eight weeks. PSNP exposure lowered heart rate and increased urine osmolality. In control rats, MG activation was greater in the AP than in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), a cardiovascular center protected by the BBB. However, PSNPs significantly altered MG reactivity in both regions, indicating that areas shielded by the BBB are as susceptible as unprotected ones. These results suggest that circulating PSNPs disrupt cardiovascular homeostasis, likely via MG activation in autonomic brain regions, highlighting the urgent need for further research into nanoplastic-induced neuroinflammation and systemic effects.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
