| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
An international conference "Borderlands in the time of crisis" was organized at Hokkaido University on December 10-11, 2022. The conference was dedicated to transnational relations, migration, territorial disputes and local identities in Sakhalin, Hokkaido and the Northern Territories/Southern Kurils, and included reports and discussions by researchers from Japan, South Korea and the UK, as well as presentations by representatives of Japan Sakhalin Association, Korean International Network, Karafuto Ainu Association and Kitami Japan-Russia Friendship Association.
Principal Investigator's report was dedicated to regional exchange and Japan-Russia sister cities in Hokkaido. A separate report dedicated to shifting Russo-Japanese border and migration was presented by Research Collaborator.

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Following the escalation of the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the rapidly changing international situation have made it difficult to acquire data and interview individuals located in Russia. In 2022, many exchange organizations in Japan have postponed or cancelled Russia-related activities. In these circumstances, a major revision of the original research plan was required, and the research period was extended.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the 2023 academic year, Principal Investigator will obtain more data on the Japanese side, as well as finish the work on the data already acquired in Nemuro, Asahikawa and Wakkanai, and publish the results of the analysis in a peer-reviewed article.
The research on the visa-free exchange program and its reportage in Japanese newspapers will be published as a separate peer-reviewed article.

| Causes of Carryover |
In the 2022 academic year, travel expenses were carried out only for locations in Japan. Due to the changes in the original research plan, travel expenses for locations in Russia were used to fund an international conference. In the 2023 academic year, the remainder of the budget will be used for follow-up visits to locations in Japan, as well as for hiring an assistant for help with data processing.
