Outline of Annual Research Achievements

All the 3 articles planned in the project were presented in international conferences and published in international peer-reviewed journals. The first one, reported last year, was undertaken in Barcelona and focused on an institutional form of participatory governance promoted by a local public authority. Based on interviews to ,local stakeholders, the study revealed the difficulties for the achievement of consensual views for strategic tourism development, while showing the increasing collaborative initiatives involving different organizations. The first article published this year was undertaken online in India, revealing the potential of digital technologies for the implementation of large-scale collaborative processes of consultation and decision-making. The study revealed the effectiveness of conjoint analysis for the definition of marketing strategies. Finally, a study undertaken in Sweden combined local stakeholders and tourism students with international researchers, revealing the potential of the open-space methodology as a participatory approach in order to discuss, frame e find solutions common problems of the local community. In particular, the presence of elements not belonging to this community was perceived as an important condition for the achievement of a much wider and creative set of proposals for sustainable tourism development.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to the difficulty to coordinate international collaborations due to reorganizations of individual works, the production of the 3 articles took some more time than planned. However, the objectives and expected outputs of the project remain unchanged.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The research is now working on the final output of the project, which is a book summarizing the main achievements and offering a synthesis of the knowledge on this field. The questions related to participatory methods of tourism planning and management of tourism described in the original proposal will be framed within a broader frame of Economic Geography of Tourism, constituting an original contribution in this field.
Assuming tourism as a place-dependent activity, requiring appropriate analytical tools for the analysis of the spatial dimension of the related economic processes. However, studies relying on Economic Geography theoretical or methodological frameworks are relatively scarce. This book offers an innovative effort to systematize how traditional and contemporary concepts and analyses based on this body of knowledge can be applied to tourism studies, taking into consideration the opportunities, challenges and problems of contemporary economic systems, along with the successive reconfigurations of space and its analyses in globalized and digitalized societies. Implications for tourism planning, management and governance - including the involvement of local communities - will be discussed along the book.
The book is now under preparation and it is expected to be published in 2024

Causes of Carryover

In the final year, the largest part of the expenses relate to dissemination activities, both involving the participation of the researcher in international conferences and the invitation of foreign researchers to visit Japan. A smaller part of the funds will be used to cover production costs of the book included in the plan (language check).
